Tajikistan Records $3.52M in Damages from Illegal Crypto Mining Operations
Tajikistan's authorities are grappling with the fallout of illegal cryptocurrency mining operations, which have left the state with a $3.52 million electricity bill. Attorney General Vokhidzoda revealed that individuals imported mining equipment and siphoned off power to mine digital assets illegally. Criminal cases have been opened against four to five suspects, with nearly 200 cases tied to unpaid electricity usage since January.
Mining farms hidden in private homes and businesses are routinely shut down, but the practice persists. Over 3,988 people have been arrested for illicit electricity consumption, totaling $4.26 million in losses. The report underscores the challenges of policing an industry that thrives on high-powered computing and unchecked energy access.
